I have heard that installing a standard virus program like Norton 2001 is bad for an exchange server. Can someone explain to me why, and if it were installed some of the problems that might occur.

Thank You

I would reccommend McAfee's Virus Suite... It's much better than Norton and it integrates very good with exchange 5.5 and 2000.

It's not good to install a standard file-based antivirus scanner on an Exchange Server since the virus scanner also scans log files. This can cause these files to become corrupt.

I recommend you to install Norton Antivirus for Microsoft Exchange which is a great product. I use it myself and it's easy to use, easy to setup and manage.

There is a risk factor to installing av on your exchange server as Lardum mentioned. I would suggest specifying which directories the av scans if you must have a av. In theroy, if you have you email AV upto date and manage (check out Norton's Corp edition...which can push virus defs) and/or lockdown your desktops then you shouldn't be worried about viruses on your Ex server.

Also check out Antigen for Exchange, by Sybari (sybari.com). I nixed my Norton's for Exchange for this and haven't had a virus make it through since. This product has excellent detection, repair and def updates. The is one of the more proactive virus companies I've seen. Mantislee
