I've been looking at a friends machine who, for the last week or so, has been unable to connect to the internet.

I used ToolbarCop, Stinger and Norton AV (as part of NIS 2004 suite) and cleaned up things like the gain toolbar and a couple of virii.

I then tried to open the Norton AV options and was informed that one or more of the files was corrupt and the product required uninstalling and reinstalling. My machine is pretty secure, so I plugged him into my Broadband connection and tried running the Home Networking Wizard on his machine to get to the internet to do an on-line virus and malware scan but the wizard fails to start. I uninstalled NIS 2004 and tried this again (I know, somewhat risky with only the Windows firewall), but still to no avail.

Trying to re-install NIS 2004 then just produced the error 'The MSI must be launched through setup'. Using my PC I got onto the symantec website and have followed all their instructions for dealing with this error and correctly re-installing the product but I still get the same problem. No matter what I do I can't connect his machine to the internet or start the home networking wizard, I've even used MsConfig to only start system services on boot. The latest version of Stinger can't find any virii on the machine and I'm a stuck.

Does anyone have any idea's??

Rhys666:

Had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago.

My fix was to disable Norton (partly done by virii) and then installed AVG Free, that allowed me to quarantine two virii and delete two.

Once I knew the virri types then downloaded the effective cleaning tools.

Actually one of the virii was Sasser.d, this tried to re-install until I downloaded all critical updates from MS.

Once the system was clean I then installed NIS, disabled AVG, updated NIS.

May not work for you but could find something that Stinger is missing.
