Does anyone have information, if possible, on how to create a virtual com port on a windows XP machine. The deal is that we use an old piece of software called Cisco Dial Out Software on windows 2000 machines that uses virtual com port 3 to connect to a server on our network for modem pooling. Now the software was built for NT and the old network engineer got it working on 2000. Now I just used WININSTALL to get it working on XP. I have it installed as well as the driver but you need to configure the software to use COM3 which does not exist. When installing on a 2000 machine it automatically creates a COM3 for you, but not on XP. I've looked around an really have not found much. Can anyone be of some help?

Thanks, nunzeo

I just manually installed a COM3 port on XP in a minute? Obviously required some config before it would start...but was just remembering how to do it.

Control Panel
Add Hardware Wizard
Let Wizard search
Yes, Hardware connected
On "Installed hardware dialog" scroll to bottom and select "Add new HW device"
Next dialog - Second option to manually select from list
Choose "Ports (COM & LPT)
Manufacturer "Standard Port type" on left side
Model "Communications Port" on right side and NEXT
And next again.

Your new COM3 port should be installed. You may, however, need to configure it to use a specific IRQ and set the speeds required. (can't help there though)

Hope this helps.
