In my old outlook program, when I inserted an image file or received an image file as an attachment, it would be open (the actual image).
Now, with OE, when I attach or insert an image file, or receive one. I have to manually open it.
Can someone tell me how to make the image actually display the image and not just the icon and file name.
TIA,
Rookie

Sounds like you were using the HTML editor in Outlook for sending but as far as receiving I have only seen images automatically appear if the message was received in HTML format. If the message was plain text or RTF then I have never seen Outlook open image attachments automatically for these formats.

With OE images are typically automatically opened in the message when viewed or previewed (towards the bottom of the message) but not on sending. When sending the message the image would show just as an attachment until after the message was sent. Once sent then you can look at the message in the sent folder and the image would automatically appear.

I hope some of this information is useful.

That is exactly what I am talking about.
When I look at the sent messages, the image doesn't open automatically. It also doesn't open automatically when I receive a message with an image attached. I have to go to the attachment and manually open it. I don't know how it got configured that way or how to fix(reset) it.
thanks, any thoughts.

If you are familiar with navigating through the registry you may want to look at the following key

HKEY_CU\Identities\{your identity number}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 and look to see if there is a DWORD entry labled "Automatically Inline Images" (typically the entry is not there by default. If it is there and set to zero then that is why images would not show.

(your identity number can be found by looking in OE TOOLS - OPTION - MAINTENANCE and look at the STORE FOLDERS)

If you don't see that entry you can try to add it or you may want to look into a free program called Xsetup which can be found at It will allow you to correct\tweak the OE feature. joegz

Your post did not indicate the OE version you have installed. Note that OE6 does not support Outlook Express Picture Slide Show. If you have OE6, you will need to modify your registry settings (if you feel comfortable doing that), and follow the drill in the previous post concerning modifying the DWORD entry. Actually, there are two entries involving inline images. I have deleted both entries, the one mentioned plus the one that deals with delay. The Picture Slide Show feature works fine now in my OE6.
