I hope someone can help me out here...
....I formatted a computer that was having problems to start fresh. (It wasn't shutting down right, problems with the network, etc). The problem that I'm having now was not a problem until after I formatted the computer. After I formatted it I started to add drivers. I have the restoration disk from Gateway for all the drivers. I installed that driver for the display adapter from the gateway cd and then when I had to restart the computer it went to a black screen and didn't do anything. I then proceeded to download the latest driver off the gateway site and install that driver. Same thing, when I restart the computer it goes the a black screen. When it does this I can go into safe mode and go into the display properties --> Advanced --> Adapters --> and change the refresh rate from unknown to Adapter. When I change this setting it will reboot and go into windows in normal mode. However, if I reboot the machine it starts all over again. I then proceeded to download a driver from intel's web site thinking that possibly gateway might have something messed up with their driver, but it is doing the same thing. This is getting very frustrating and I don't know what else to try. I have formatted and reinstalled windows many of times and I know how to install drivers. This should be very basic, but it isn't turning out that way. The driver that I'm installing is the Intel 810 Chipset Graphics Driver (DC100) for Windows 98. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Sandy

I know how to fdisk, partition and then format. I have done it many of times. My problem is that display adapter driver is causing me problems. The version Restoration cd from gateway is 13.6.

Thanks,
Sandy

Well, it is working now. All I did was change the monitors and it is working just fine now. I always just take the towers over to my desk and work on them and leave the monitor there. The only thing I can think of is that the two drivers had conflicts.

Thanks,
Sandy

Didn't mean to imply anything, just that some people format and don't fdisk.....and I asked version number cause I have 9.6, and was going to give you this long discertation on how to use the utilities on it.....however after reading your post, it sems that maybe that particular monitor didn't have the "Display capabilities" that the driver was trying to optimize....
glad you found a workaround/fix.......:>)
