My PC (was Win 95 now upped to 98) after 5 - 10 minutes, makes a strange chirp from the motherboard and then the display appearance "scheme" automatically changes to "High Contrast Black Extra Large" I upgraded to Win 98 thinking this would cure the problem but it hasn't. I am at a loss?? I have a Trident video driver. Also just recently updated to latest virus definitions and scanned with Norton 2001 Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds as though you have a hardware problem with either the video card (most likely suspect) or the motherboard. What happens when you shut the system down for a short period of time (say 20 minutes or so) and then reboot. Does go back to where it was originally or does it stay the same. Another thing to consider is how old is the system itself? If it is more then three or four years then again this would point to a hardware related problem. If you have another video card handy (or could borrow one for a short period of time) try swapping it out, install the correct drivers for it and see if the same results happen. If it does then there is most likely a problem with the motherboard. In my experience I have never seen software cause a hardware device such as a motherboard or video card to chirp unless its been overspeed.

Try these things and let us know what your results were.

Cheers,

Tim Schuy
