On my work computer which has a lot of programs on it. The Start > all programms is slow opening the first time (more then a minute) after it ussually goes well.

This is a dual core with 2gigs of RAM and it is pretty fast.

My homecomputer with pretty much the same setup doesn't have this problem.

Does anybody know what this could be. Or how I could try to get to the cause of this, Because it really annoying.

I tried defrag. chkdsk. and cccleaner.

TIA.

Go to start then run and type msconfig then click ok. You'll see several tabs, more importantly you'll see the Start Up tab, unless you know what you are doing do not touch any of the other tabs. Under Start Up uncheck all of the non-essential items.

Basically all you want to start would be any drivers listed there (typically you'll see sound drivers or video drivers) and your virus scan. Other than that it all can go. Once you have unchecked all the items in the list you don't need to start at boot click OK and reboot. See if that speeds up your performance.

Cheers

It could be that your "All Programs" is timing out. In other words, you have a shortcut in All Programs that is pointing to, say, a CDRom drive without the proper disc in it (or no disc in it) so it is timing out.

I would explore around the "All Programs" a little (right click on Start --> Explore all users) and make sure you don't have any bad shortcuts in there.

It's not that bad, you can either inspect them one at a time, or just browse to the start bar folder and move half of 'em out. restart and see if the problem persists. Basically, just do a boolean search manually. If it is a single non-local resource issue, you should be able to get it down to an acceptable number of possibilities in a few passes.

It may not take as long as you think.

You will probably only need to check the programs directly on the start menu. I don't think that programs in sub menus will cause a problem until you try to open that sub menu.

I had this problem and the full start menu opened fine, but when I went to the particular program group that was loading from the network it took a long time (particularly using VPN from home).

Good luck.
