I just inherited a Win2k server and I tried to install ActiveStates ActivePerl installer, InstMsiW.exe, and I get the message that "the service already exisits". I don't see any sign of PERL or any .pl files on the server and the owner says he doesn't think that PERL has been installed.

There is no PERL service running.

How do I reinstall PERL?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply siberian.

Yes there is a perl.exe in 'd:\perl\bin'. There is also wperl.exe, perl5.6.1.exe, perlglob.exe, a2p.exe, and ppm3-bin.exe in the same 'bin' folder.

I also found a 'd:\perl\lib' and a 'd:\perl\site\lib' folders that has some of the same subfolders (but diff. files) in them.

It looks like someone has installed, or tried to install more than one build of perl plus a tutorial or two. There is nothing about perl in add/remove programs. I wonder if I can delete all these perl files and just start over? Or would I run into problems like registry keys etc.?

I would....

take backup of registry, zap references to perl in reg, rename all perl directories and try to install again
