Very Large Excel and Word files

I saw an article on this somewhere on Tek-Tips, but since search is not working, maybe someone can answer it for me. I have a normal word file, but after some people added some text, It grew to a couple Mgs big!!!!!

How can that be with all text just being in one page?

I heard something of added VB code somewhere hidden in the document. If so, where can I find those?

In the Word document, go to the very end of the document, delete the last character by backspacing, press the delete key and hold it for a few seconds. Re-type the last character. Save the document. I don't particularly care about apathy
