hi everybody,

I want to set up a web-based email system similar to yahoo / hotmail etc... but only for a much smaller user group (>100).

What do i need to ask my ISP for?
Would it be dedicated SMTP server? or Pop3 and then I would have to sort out the web-based interface to it?

Any ideas much appreciated...

The odds are if you have your email hosted externally, you already have the capability of webbased email.

If you have a Domain name, for example jez@yourcompanyname.com

you should be able to use your pop3 client for recieving in oe/o2k2 from anywhere.
outgoing mail however will require the smtp of the isp you are connected to

now, if you want it web based. you just need to ask your isp what the http is already.

for example mine is pop3.companyname.com in my browser and everyone can login and check there email. yours may be similar.

Or, if you have the cash, set up an exchange server and have the use OWA (Outlook Web Access)

Thanks for this guys,
These are some good ideas but at the moment I only have one unused pop box on the host account, and i am using mailforwarders. What i need to do is have lots of email addresses with a non-central location.
What i am trying to understand is how web mail works....or what resources i need for it?
Just an SMTP server?

RE: marcs41
If there was a central company IT presence a dedicated email server might be an option but this is all gonna be on the internet so i need to get hosting for whatever solution i come up with.
ALSO I wouldnt use Exchange because it would contaminate a nice clean non-MS environment (and cost more than almost any other solution - lisencing to the MS Empire.) but thanks .

O, you want it for free and off-site on the net.
You did not mention that.
I suggest you search or have a look at some Linux places (I assume that is what you use).
With that OS you will find a Zillion offers, but for your own sake, check the support part first, as that is ussualy overlooked.
But .. if you want it on the web, Linux or Windows don't matter, it will run web based, so the only thing that matters is all browsers support.

There are many web interfaces that work with the usual *nix mail programs. One of my personal favorites is horde

Sorry,

I suppose i should have mentioned it, but yes it is a linux environment, I was really looking to find out the server info required for this kind of thing as it is the server costs that will make or break it, but i have got that now so thanks again.

I have checked out Horde and it looks good, it is also appealing because like the website it will be attached to, it runs on PHP.
