We are upgrading a software package at our company. The upgrade includes new Crystal Reports that were designed in CR 9. I currently have 8.5 and know I must upgrade to 9 to be able to make changes to the reports in the new upgrade. My question is would it be beneficial for me to go ahead and purchase 10? Are there any drawbacks or problems with compatability for 9 to 10 and vice versa?

Go ahead and nab 10, it has some additional functionality which makes it worthwhile.
As I recall the file formats are compatible for 9/10.

As a programmer, I'd like to be working with the latest Crystal version, rather than 8.5. But since my salary comes out of the same budget, I'm all in favour of sticking with the cheapest option that gets the job done.
