Hello,

I wasn't sure if this was the proper forum for this but I didn't know where else to put it...

After installing XP I installed MS Office. In my haste, I didn't uncheck the option to install Outlook so it overlaid the version that came with XP with the old version of Outlook.

I've tried going thru the "change Windows components" process to "uninstall" Outlook by unchecking it. However, it doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone know how I can uninstall the old version of Outlook and install the new one from my XP cd?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Outlook does not come with XP.

It is only available from Office, or as a stand-alone product.

Office does not overlay Outlook Express either. Outlook Express is installed as a part of the IE package.

Could you clarify what you believe has been overlaid from the original XP installation package?

First of all, thanks for not flaming me for being dense.

I should have done a little more research and explained better. Here's what happened...

I had Windows 98 SE and IE 5.x installed. Upgraded pc to Windows XP Pro and IE 6.x.

After upgrading to XP Pro I installed Office 97. I don't know what version of Outlook I had before all the changes but afterwards Outlook was different:
1) My inbox only had the 2 messages you get when you first install it. All the other e-mails that were in my inbox and all my addresses were gone.
2) The title bar said "Outlook 97"

So I guess my question is how do I upgrade to the newest version of Outlook? It sounds like I just need to download the latest version of IE. Is that right? Or can I just upgrade Outlook?

Also, is there a way to get back the e-mails, addresses, etc from my old install?

Again, sorry for being so dense and asking what are probably very simple questions.

Thanks MUCH for any help!

Open up Outlook Express (you should be able to find it on your desktop and/or in the start menu).

Let me know if that's the program you were using before. Somehow I think it was, because Outlook does not come preinstalled with any versions of Windows.

So what I'm saying is that Outlook would not have been on your computer before you installed Office 97. Outlook Express would have been, but not Outlook. Not unless you installed it once before too.

The pc in question is at home. I'll check it out tonight and post more info.

Thanks!!

The only upgrade path from Office 97 to Outlook 2002 (the version that comes with Office XP) is to either buy the product as a stand-alone, or buy the Office XP suite. As Office 2003 ships late in October, it would be wise to upgrade then. From my own reaction, Outlook is the most clearly improved part of the Office 2003 package.

But the real issue I think is how to get your old mail back. What you need to do is to find it, and import the older filestores into the new one you created.

Search the drive for *.pst because:

1. The files aren't required to be in a specific location; in fact if they are running 9x without login profiles the whole \username\localsettings\ gets skipped. PST files can reside anywhere on the harddrive, or even on a network share.

2. The files you want the most won't be named archive.pst (old stuff that got archived) or backup.pst (this is typically created when backing up data, something you did not say you had done in Outlook before the upgrade.) The "normal" name is Outlook.PST or Mailbox.PST, but again, it can be anything the user may have typed in, but the .pst extension will be there.

Once you have your PST file(s) located import them with FILE->IMPORT&EXPORT wizard choosing PERSONAL FOLDERS as the type of file you are importing from.

bcastner - thanks for the great info! I'll work on it tonight and update post tomorrow.

Well, searched the hard drive last night for *.pst files. Only found the one from the current install of Outlook. Aaargh!!

Oh well. I still need to figure out how to upgrade to current version of Outlook Express. I finally did some research (should have done that right away, eh?)and what I found was:
"In a nutshell, the difference between Microsoft Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook itself, is that Microsoft Outlook Express is the email component of Microsoft Outlook, stripped down to the basics and offered free with Microsoft Internet Explorer."

So it sounds like I just need to get latest version of IE and install it.

Thanks all for your help. I love this site. I've gotten sooo much useful information from it.

Later!

Start, Help and Support. Click on the "keep your computer up to date with Windows Update."

There is likely several updates you will need, so it is better to let the update service handle it. You may need to reboot and go back to finish the job.

OK, now I'm really confused...

Last night I decided to rebuild my wife's pc and thought I'd do it "right" this time.

Before doing anything I backed up EVERYTHING to a hard drive on another pc. Then I reformatted the hard drive and installed XP Pro. After doing that I checked and it had a good version of Outlook Express.

Next I installed MS Office 97 but this time I made sure to uncheck the Outlook option. Cool so far. Office installed fine and Outlook was left alone.

So now I figured I'd just do what a previous post said: search for *.PST file(s) on the backup drive, import them into Outlook and I'd have all the e-mails and addresses back.

Problem is, it found not a single *.PST file. So where are all the e-mails and addresses stored. I'd hate to think that I've lost all of them.

Any help is appreciated.

PS - Sorry for the long, wordy post. Figured more info would help. : )
