about every two minutes there comes from my windows 98 computer an incredibly long tone. Does this mean anything?

stupid question probably, please answer anyway. ;)

I'm sure it does, ckeck all the fans to see if they are turning. It could be overheating. Does it work OK other than the tone? You would really have to give detailed system specs before we could give you more than a guess as to what the problem might be...
A recent virus can cause stange tones to be made...

This does sound like an overheat warning from the BIOS or something like this. Typically a CPU cooler has fins and the clog up with dust. Sometimes this causes heat problems and the solution is to open the PC and take a can of compressed air and blow out all the dust from the CPU Cooling Fins under the fan.

This will make a cloud of dust if the computer has not been opened for over 2 years. May want to do it someplace like a garage workbench or some other area. It is surprising how much dust can be in the air.

Might be the BIOS telling you the CMOS(BIOS) battery is about to Die....so get a new one

Look in the BIOS setup and see if the temperature alarm is set, and at what temp.

If it happens only on boot it might be the CMOS Battery. However, I have seen the Temperature settings in the BIOS casuse this. One possible solution might be to just turn the temperature warning alarm off or change it to the highest setting. The reason I say this is that the temperature sensors on motherboards can not generally be trusted to give accurate readings.

I would still inspect the CPU Cooler thoroghly and be prepared to clean it.

I have also seen long alarms that can be Memory related. If the temperature in the case gets too high many components such as system memory and video card memory can get too hot and cause problems. High case air temperatures can cause damage to the drives as well. This is why you need good air flow inside a case.

I went to the boot menu and it said that indeed the CPU temperature was too high. the thing was running normally and everything, I didn't know why but I adjusted the hard drive a litle closer and that has worked. thanks everyone for your help.
