Hi

Ive got an issue with out netbackup topology. Currently we have one master server, 7 SAN media servers and have 7 clients all being backed up using Veritas Netbackup 4.5 FP 6. Currently we are undergoing a few major projects and as a result a number of new servers will need to be backed up. We have a MSL 6000, connected to the master server via a EVA 5000 SAN, we are looking to purcahse another one or two tape libraries but not sure if we should add them to our current master server.

We were thinking of adding 2 more Media severs and attaching the tape libraries directly onto them. Or alternatively we were thinking about adding another master server and attaching the tape libraries onto that. The only issues i have this is that im not sure how the databases would work. Would be have 2 separate database and 2 sets of separate catalogue tapes?

I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas!

Cheers

K

Why do you want another master? It's a bit like having two managers, they do very little work, they add very little to the process and just complicate the work. It's the media servers that do all the work. And the new master would also have to be a media server to run the library. Of course with seperate libraries you need to manage the tapes but that can be done when you add them.

Hi Lenski, thanks for te quick reply.

If i added another Media servers which its sole purpose was to backup Clients, what kind of license would be required for this? Basically we dont want to overload the master server with client backups which we are doing at the moment.

Many thanks

Sorry I don't know the license details but if you think about it the new server will have to be a media server and you are just unsure if it should also be a master. The master+media has to cost more then just media. Remember that all the master does is schedule the backups and hold some databases. It does very little real work so the one you have should easy manage.

Lenski,

Ok another question if we purchase a normal media server license, can this also sit on the SAN and just soley backup clients? The reason im asking this because you get 2 types of licenses one for SAN media License which is cheaper but can only back itlsef up and a normal Media server license which is more expensive but you can backup up clients with this. So thats why im asking if you get a normal media server license but have this on the SAN!

I think you can but I don't know for sure, our set up is differnat and license issues are sorted by somebody else.

Here is an explaination for you:

SAN Media Server - Can only backup itself and no clients

Media Server - Can backup clients as well as itself. You can be on a SAN, NAS, DAS, it doesnt matter where the data resides.

Hi Comtec17,

Thanks for you input. I also have a another question. We now have decided to add another tape library, but just wondering if we needed another NSR or could we just add another module to our current one! Do you know if a network storage router has the capabilty of adding additional modules?
