We currently backup our SQLServer databases using SQLServer and then copy the .bak files off to tape. We are contemplating using the SQLServer version of Backup Exec and backing up the .mdf, .ndf files directly. When a backup of the .mdf files takes place does it stop the SQLServer service?

It not supposed to. If you selecting the mdf/ldf file directly it will actively exclude them. So if you create a job and seletc the ldf and mdf file it will complete sucessfully with no byte count. Veritas will not back them up becuase they are open. you must use the sql agent or use AOFO with a registry change to get the files. If you used the SQL agent it would not stop the services either just as SQLBackup doesnt

There are lots of horror stories about SQL Agents not restoring correctly; I have a few myself and not just with BE... I strongly recommend you continue doing what you've been doing.
