Can anyone help. We were running a trial version of Veritas backup exec with exchange agent.

It has come to the end of its evaluation period and we have decided to stick with Win NT backup. I have uninstalled backup exec. Does anyone know if my scheduled NT backup will resume automatically?

We have a batch file but I am not sure how to edit it. Can anyone help. I want to exclude some directories etc until we get a bigger Dat drive

many thanks Kathy

I forgot to add, we had a scheduled backup running with the at command in NT before we started the backup exec evaluation,

Your scheduled backup shouldn't have been affected by Veritas running, in fact, your scheduled backup should have continued to run the whole time, unless it was disabled. When you type "AT" at the command-line, does it show that there is a job scheduled? Why don't you post the contents of your batch file so that people here can actually help you make the changes. Change the server name if you are worried about security issues. To find out the syntax of the ntbackup commands, you can type 'ntbackup /?' at the command-line.

By the way, you can only specify entire folders or directories when using the command-line version of NTBACKUP. You cannot specify individual files or make any exclusions. You also can't use wild-card characters to name folders or files.

thanks,

at gives this... each M T W Th F 22.00 PM c: winnt\ent\backup.cmd

the backup command is this

C:\winnt\ent> ntbackup backup DS \\CABSERVER is \\ CABSERVER c: e: /d "weekday" /b hc:eek:n/ t normal/ l "c\winnt\backup.log" /c /v

It is running as I type this (thankfully) I had the veritas backup scheduled for the same time, so I suppose that overrode the NT backup, while it was still installed.

What would really help me is if you could tell me how to edit the job. Directories level is fine. At present we only have an 4/8Gb tape drive, so I am having to leave a lot off if I want to backup onto one tape.

For some reason, the tapes will only take 3 Gb some days. One of the reasons I tried the evaluation version of Backup exec was to troubleshoot this problem but no joy. Even with complete overwrite and different types of compression, the tapes were not even taking 3 Gb. However we will soon have a new server and a larger drive.

Anyway thanks for your help and I look forward to reading any comments

You said the current .cmd file says the following:

C:\winnt\ent> ntbackup backup DS \\CABSERVER is \\ CABSERVER c: e: /d "weekday" /b hc:eek:n/ t normal/ l "c\winnt\backup.log" /c /v

The stuff I put in bold is what is being backed up. If you only wanted a directory called 'data' on e: to be backed up, you'd replace 'e:' with 'e:\data'. You can add additional paths to the statement as well. I don't know of a limit. For example:

C:\winnt\ent> ntbackup backup DS \\CABSERVER is \\ CABSERVER c: e:\data e:\logs e:\users e:\backup e:\prod /d "weekday" /b hc:eek:n/ t normal/ l "c\winnt\backup.log" /c /v

Hope this helps,

Thank you, although backup ran yesterday, it didn't complete as space ran out and there is no tape loader and it was backing up everything, I will try your suggestion
