Veritas 9.1 Windows takes forever to restore files, please help

Greetings all! Just came across this site today! Looking forward to sharing knowledge with ya'll.


Environment:

Windows 2003 Server
Veritas Backup Exec 9.1
HP SureStore Ultrium 230 (100 GB)

Situation:

When I am restoring 2-3 small files (under 5 MB total) my restores are taking hours. It seems that Veritas BE needs to run through all 200 GB (2 tapes) of our backups to restore the files. It used to simply find the files it needed in the catalog, and restore them... total process time, 10-15 minutes. Now it is scanning both tapes... and taking hours.

This change started after I upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1

What's even more strange, is that in the Byte Count column, where it would normally just display the total size of the files restored, it is counting upwards of 180,000,000 KB (current number and climbing).

Anyone know what is causing VBE to do this?

Something doesnt sound right. Have you appliced backup exec service pack 2?

I have Media Server Version 9.1 Rev 4691
and Admin Consol Version 9.1 Rev 4691

Ok, but there are HOTFIX and service packs.

I've installed everything that the auto update checker has listed. So yes, I would say that I have the lasted patches applied.

Are the restores local or remote.

I'm having the same problem; I think I'll just upgrade to v10. Ultimately I think the problem in our case was that the our tapes were filling up and so it didn't know where to write the On-Media catalog. Tools | Options | Catalog | "Use storage media-based catalogs"

Otherwise I'm having the identical problem; a simple restore takes 2-4 hours (50GB tape) and it's reading every file over again...
