I've just built a computer
Azza 361BS KLE133 VT8361 + VT82C686B
Athlon XP 1700+
Kingston PC133 128mb x 2
Volcano 5 cooler
windows 98se plus98 pack

It was running a little hotter than what I would like. I thought I'd use a software cooler before I spent more on another HSF, rain which I've used before didn't work, I found this program called Vcool and it said it would work with the newer processors and mobo, my chipset and XP cpu's were not listed as supported, still I thought I'd try it out.

Here's the results.

no vcool

default setting
39 idle / 49 load

ram 2t 2 bank interleave
43 idle / 51 load

ram 2t 4 bank interleave
40 idle / 49 load

with vcool:

default setting
40 idle / 50 load

ram 2t 2 bank interleave
44 idle / 50 load

ram 2t 4 bank interleave
31 idle / 41 load

I don't get it. Vcool works with the ram set at higher settings but not at moderate or default settings.

Why would it run cooler with such a big difference with the ram set at 4 bank interleave, the performance is better with 2 bank interleave by about 3%, so I can understand if that runs hotter, but default is hot too.

Can someone clue me in as to why, also why would interleave make that much of a difference?

Is this really true, seems like no help or very little help from vcool until I set ram to 4 bank interleave, I'm thinking there might be errors here someplace. I'm planning to get a temp gauge to get a direct reading and see if there is a difference in reading.

Thanks for any comments on this.
