Using win98SE,384MB RAM,AMD Athlon. I am trying to change the value of MaxFileCache in the System.ini. It is currently set at MaxFileCache=15360. I wish to change it to 98304. When I make the change and save it, it reverts back to 15360 when I restart/reboot. I have run scanregw.exe immediately after making the change. I have done this a number of times but still it reverts back to 15360. I can make other change to the System.ini with no problems. Any ideas. Thanks.

That is very strange. What happens when you delete the line altogether and reboot?

It would also be helpful to know:

1) Is this PC on a network?
2) Are there any other Cache entries in system.ini like MinFileCache?
3) What is the swapfile size set to?

My guess is that some other program, perhaps a data backup or system utility app, is restoring the entry on bootup. See if the change holds when restarting in Safe Mode (F8) instead of Normal Mode.

Also;
check your REG for these entries, to see if they exist

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VCACHE
"StaticVxD"="*VCACHE"
"Start"=hex:00
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\VMM32Files
"vcache.vxd"=hex:00

[386Enh]
MaxPagingFileSize=
MaxPhysPage=

your MaxFileCache is under the
[vcache] area ...right??

Try a setting of 56000, just to see if it sticks

Ooops......[3eyes]......DoH!

that 56000, needs to be a multiple of 1024.....so
56320 is more like it [smile]

========

maybe add a MinFileCache= size as well, to offset the Max

Hello all,

ME7112, check out if anything strange in \run and \runonce in the registry.

Thanks for the help in solving my VCACHE problem of not making changes to it in my system.ini to stick. It was as tsuji said...something in my startup. Specifically it was MEMTURBO. I disabled it and all is well.

Subject-unable to makes changes to my system.ini Vcache and make it stick. I cited tsuji as the one who solved my problem in error. While everyone's suggestion was helpful, it was cdogg's answer that solved it. It was the program Memturbo loading through my startup that was the villian. Disabled it and all is well. As cdogg suggested I make the change, restarted in Safe Mode and it stuck. After disabling Memturbo it stuck in normal mode. Thanks again to all but specifically cdogg.
