VB6 COM Port Communications

My VB6 app has been working beautifully communicating with a timer through the com port.

Using a USB - COM port device, however, the communications does not work at all! Does anyone have any ideas about what might have to change when one is using a 'virtual' COM port like this rather than the real thing? I have the correct drivers installed and it tells me the com port number to use but the communications are intermittent at best.

Any ideas or sources of information would be welcome.

Thanks, David Abineri

I have heard references that certain USB - Serial adaptors are glitchy. I have not had any trouble with the Radio Shack model. Timing professionals seem to prefer PCMCIA cards with serial ports (they are available at roughly twice the cost but can be purchased with more than 1 serial port). I think the preference is based more on physical wear within the port rather than with any inherent fault with the driver or adaptor cord.

USB-Serial adaptor cords must have the driver installed on each individual USB port that you might plug it into. Device Manager will assign a different Com Port # to different USB ports.

What timer are you communicating with?
Are you using MSCOMM32.OCX?
