VB2008 breakpoints lock computer

I am new to VS2008 but have written several programs and when debugging, am able to set breakpoints and single step etc. However, I am now working a larger program and when I try to set breakpoints, when execution reaches that point, it locks the application up and I have to use the task manager to get reset. If I execute the program without breakpoints, it runs fine and produces expected results. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

Thanks for any clues you might be able to offer!
