In VB6 i'm making a program with a large amount of picture boxes on screen at any one time, this in itself makes everything quite laggy and unstable. is there any way to get around this problem and generally make VB run a bit better when using graphics in general. i do have a a high spec system so i dont think thats the problem. would i be right in saying vb is getting the processor to draw the pictures instead of using graphics hardware? if so does anyone know how to get use the graphics.

Yes, you'd be right. A picturebox using standard VB code won't utilize a hardware accelerator. In order to do this you need to draw using DirectX. Look for 'DirectX tutorials and vb6' on google, there's a load of examples, it's quite complicated though.
