I have a report where the details section is broken out into three sections, (a, b, and c). I have a box drawn from the bottom of section c into the page footer, with the report footer suppressed. The size of this box is dependent upon how much sections "a" and b expand. The box represents an area where people can hand write notes. The problem is that I would like lines here. I can't figure a way to have a varible number of lines show on the report. When I format the box I can choose a fill color. If I could only choose a repeating pattern as the fill, and could choose an image for the repeat, I would be done. Any other ideas?

what happens if you just draw a line on each A, B & C section of the details? do they repeat on their own or is there always 3 details total per page?

are you grouping the data? something with a page break before or afterwards, perhaps?

do you want the A,B&C sections to ALWAYS repeat the same number of times or 3 times for one group and 5 times for another group, for example?

how are you getting data for the report?

cheers

There is always 3 details total per page. This is really a form. One record per page.

The length of the notes area is variable because it fills whatever is left over on the page.

Thanks

all i can think of is maybe add a subreport that has 1 detail record with a line drawn on it. i'm sure could pass a variable to it to say how many times it should repeat.

cheers

What determines the heights of detail_a and detail_b?

-LB

The height of a amd b are determined by fields and/or subreports that "can grow"

Thanks

To vary the size of detail_c, you would need to be able to count the embedded lines in detail_a and detail_b. You could do this roughly by counting the number of characters per line and the total number of characters and then attaching the total to a shared variable that can be checked in detail_c. In detail_c you could have a formula that returns a line and return that is replicated based on the balance of lines available on the page.

thanks. Since there is no perfect way to do this. I think I'll just throw a few lines on there, and let there be a varying space below the lines. But those were some great ideas.
