Hello All,

I know that I am not setting up my VAL board correctly and I believe it has to do with the data module extension. I think it may have to do with the Link option on the data module page. What should it be? How do I know what link number it should be?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Joel

It doesn't matter assign it number 1. Then type status link 1 to see if it is in service.

Thanks Colby. When I did a status on the link it says disconnected. I already tried changing the cable.

Joel

What port and type number did you assign the data module?

Do a 'list link' or 'list comm link' to see what links are available. You might have already assigned the link to your C-LAN board data mod or something else. Also, under 'cha ip-i', don't enable until you get all the conectivity together.
I've got a VAL install cheat sheet I made up at work for all the 'ethernet challenged' techs that I work with. I might be able to put it up or send it to someone that needs it.
So what release Definity are you running, if I may ask?

Colby I assigned it port 01c08. I made it an ethernet port.

PBX, if you could send me that document, I would appreciate it jfreire@lnt.com. Also, our switch is release 9.5.

Joel

you gotta put port 17 on the end of that slot number.

PBX, In my documents it says to put it on 33?

Joel

lol, my bad. i get the C-LAN and VAL ports mixed up from time to time. Sorry 'bout that. It is port 33. 17 for C-LAN.

From your expertise, why do you think it would say "disconnected" when I do a status link? I did already try the basic things like chnaging the cable to make sure that wasnt the problem. Quite confused now.

Joel

Did you administer the VAL board in "change node-names ip" and then add it in "change ip-interfaces"? Is it Enabled or turned on in ip-interfaces?

Marcell it is setup and enabled in both.

Joel

There's the problem - I dont have a link light and I cant ping it either. The status of the link says disconnected also. Thanks.

Joel

When you type the command, "change ethernet" is the VAL board set up to auto sense or not. Sometimes is better off to lock the speed and duplex on the switch and on your LAN switch as well. Try doing that and see if your link light comes on. Without a link light, no amount of programming will work.

I dont seem to have the command "change ethernet"? How do I go about locking down the speed? Thanks again.

Joel

What switch version do you have? If you have a version 9, you can do it manually. I believe the switch is already locked at 10Mbps and half duplex. (Though I'm not positive on the duplex part) Does anyone else out there know about that?

Also, you may want to try a different cable, or plugging it in to a different port on the LAN switch. The LAN cable is plugged directly into the back of the card, right? Make sure that there's no crossover dongle that it's passing through.

I tried a different cable and I switched ports also. The cable is connected to the card without a crossover. We have a Definity 9.5.

Joel

Have you tried re-seating the card? When you do this do you get the LED's on the card when it's inserted? Are you certain you have the correct connector on the back of the definity and on the correct slot?

Colby, unfortunately, I have tried reseating the card already also and no lights. I get the lights when it first recognizes the card but then Im getting nothing from the card except for the occasional blip on a light. I double checked to make sure that we had the right connector and we do. Im honestly at a loss naed may have to call someone else in to look at it. Thanks again.
