We have had a power outage several times during this heatwave in Sacramento, CA... and the last one last week has wreaked havoc on our file server. It's on a UPS backup power supply, but for some unknown reason, random files have had permissions reset to just local System and Administrator... it lost all domain user and group permissions.

We need to go through our entire file server and setup permissions again, but I'm wondering if there is a utility or software that can accurately backup and restore file permissions, as well as list out the permissions on the entire file system? Our admin is using xcacls, which is coming up with a 2600 page text file full of stuff we don't need... Any other admins out there have any suggestions for this?

If NTFS Permissions, your Enterprise backup should be able to restore the permissions as the permission is set at the file/folder level. Check with your Hardware/Software Vendor.

If Share Permission, OS level, you will have to reset manualy.

Should be easy if you have your share permissions set too everyone Full. Don't know if anyone wants to chim in but, I set my share level at everyone full and then restric access using the NTFS permission. Seems most shops have adopted this practice.

Good luck...
