In control panel, modems, make sure only one is listed. If there is more than one, remove them all and reinstall. If you have an older modem listed, remove that one to. In fact, if you had an older modem at one point, boot to safe mode, go to device manager, and if its still listed there under modems, remove it. What os? What if you startup the computer and hyperterminal to a number, 1-800-543-3279? Does it dial out okay, or similar problems?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
