Advice on running Windows 2003 Domain controller in windows 2000 Domain

Hello,

I currently have two Domain controllers running Windows 2000. Each also runs DHCP and DNS. One also runs Exchange 2000 which was the first to run AD in the Domain.

I also have a member server running Windows 2003 with SQL 2000

One of my Windows 2000 servers will be replaced next week as it has run out of space, and is over 6 year old.

I would like to install Windows 2003 on this server and move all the files from the old server to this one. I plan to do this by restoring from tape backup using Backup Exec.

Would it be possible to make the new Windows 2003 server a Domain controller and use in the same Domain as the Windows 2000 Domain controller? Are there any issues that I should be made aware of?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You can use a 2003DC in a W2K environment.

But you will need to run forestprep and domainprep from the W2003 CD first to get the schema set up correctly.

There is also an additional step because you have Exchange 2000 but I forget what it is. :-(

MS have a step-by-step guide to upgrading your domain to W2003 which lists all these little issues.
