Using USB Ports Causing Win 98 To Hang

Hi all,

I'm working on a user's machine and when her USB scanner and camera are attached to the PC, Win 98 hangs at the start up splash screen. When I unplug the scanner and the camera, Win 98 works fine and quickly. It doesn't matter which peripheral I have plugged in (scanner or camera), if the USB port is in use, Win 98 hangs.

I checked the Device Manager and there are no conflicts. I think there might be an IRQ conflict somewhere (Device Manager didn't help out) but Win 98 won't let me change the settings on any of the devices. I turned the USB keyboard/mouse option off in the BIOS, but it didn't help.

The internal modem used to have the same IRQ as the USB root hub, but I removed the USB root hub and had Win 98 see it again and Win 98 put the USB on its own IRQ.

I tried plugging in the USB cable for the camera (without connecting the other end to the camera) and the PC booted up fine. When I connected the camera, Win 98 flashed a message that it saw the camera, but the camera software couldn't see the connected camera, as it kept asking for a serial connection. Plus once the camera was connected, the machine bogged down and was really slow. I don't think it's the camera software, as connecting the USB scanner will cause the machine to hang.

This machine, and it's USB connections, used to work fine. Then, a few weeks ago, the user clicked on "something that popped up in the task bar" and her machine began to work really slow, where you could type but the letters wouldn't show up in Word for a while. I virus scanned it and the PC is clean.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to this site but am looking forward to helping others out! ~Jen

Run msinfo32 - Under Hardware Resources click on IRQs and see if any conflict.

Otherwise you may want to look into your twain drivers and see if maybe corrupt or out of date.

Has she been playing with either RealPlayer/ WindowsMediaPlayer or a USB CD-RW.....
One of the port drivers may have been overtaken....

Thanks, WheeDoggy and TT4U - I'll be back to her PC later this week and check out your tips.

Another thing I forgot to post is when Win 98 starts up, it finds the PCI BUS and wants a driver installed. I put in the Win 98 CD but didn't find the drivers and I didn't have the motherboard CD. I cancel out of the PCI Bus install and checked in Device Manager. There aren't any exclamation points, it just puts the PCI Bus under Unknown Devices. I don't understand the relationship between buses and ports so I'm confused as to how the PC can run Win 98 if it can't find the PCI bus. Thanks.

Hi again Jengineer;
The right drivers for PCI BUS 'should be'
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PCIMP.PCI (pci miniport driver)...and
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PCI.VXD...

USB PCI Bus to USB Host Controllers are usually on IRQ 9.....

You may have a problem with Device Enumeration.........
Be very careful/cautious when making any changes in here.....and these links should help....(a little anyway)

In Device Manager, jot down on paper all the info under these...
"System Devices"
1) PCI BUS (I understand right now it's listed as unknown).....do it anyway..
2) Plug and Play BIOS

"USB Serial Bus Controller"
3) USB Root Hub
4) USB PCI to USB Host Controller

If you right click Computer>Properties in Device Mangler you'll see the IRQ's, DMA, I/O, and Memory...
Maybe follow this thread
thread615-649415
too....!

Hi,

I'm working on the PC now and there are some new issues. The unknown device is a PCI Multimedia Audio Device. I'm downloading the drivers for the sound card as I type.

My question is, this PC doesn't have msinfo32 - anywhere. I've searched all over and using the run prompt will give you the file not found error. Any thoughts?

In response to Tek Tippy, except for the Multimedia device, everything is working okay.

USB Root Hub: Working properly, 2 ports available under the power tab, driver file from 4-23-99

VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Host Controller: Working properly, error detection is unchecked, driver file from 4-23-99, IRQ 10 with no conflicts. I can't change the setting to 9 like you suggested as Win 98 won't let me.

On IRQ 9 is SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus.

I think you're right in that it's the a device conflict. But with no msinfo32, what can I do? Can I load msinfo32 from the win98 cd?

Thanks!

Jenengineer;
As far as installing msinfo32, I had a similar problem only on a very old machine once(circa '94 with no pci bus).I never resolved it as I was mostly concerned with getting the HDD out of Ms-dos compatability mode, though I'm sure there's a way...
Unfortunately I've been extremely busy as of late and I can't be much more help right now......:>(....
Considering the power issues....also try this site
to see if you can find related USB and ACPI issues...
One more thought...is USB support enabled in the BIOS?
