hello
i've read that using the underscore in the name ex: my_server
is not possible because of DNS rules
is that correct?

It is possible but not recommended. Use a hyphen instead.

If you find yourself working with a machine that already is named this way, you can use Netdom to rename it safely/easily.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

Kaizer,

You are correct UNDERSCOREs are not recognized in DNS. So, you should not name a server with an underscore in it.

You are allowed to name servers with underscores but these server names will not be registed in DNS. WINS allows underscores...but if you clients are relying on DNS for servername resolution, you will run into problems when using servernames and underscores. dashes are supported...like in tek-tips.com
