using the variance calculation

Dear forum-members

In B.O. 5.1.3. there is a nice looking button to insert a column with the variance of two fields. No matter what kind of table or crosstab I create, this functionality nevers seems to become active. Has anyone any experience with this pre-set calculation type ?
