Using Excel to compute federal withholding tax

I am trying to use Excel to compute federal withholding tax using the percentage method. I saw an earlier post by pappykahn who was using the table method, but if I try to do this, using vlookup, I am unable to place the computation formula where I think it should go. Surely someone else must have encountered this same problem. Thanks for any help.

I need a formula, instead of a piece of data, in the VLOOKUP list, but I get an error message when I put it in. In the percentage method there is more than just a simple percentage involved in the calculation.

I believe you will want to lookup 2 values (base deduction, incremental %)from the table, if I remember correctly how the FITW works. I am not sure that you are able to lookup a formula, at least from your description that is what I gather. Skip is correct, please provide an example with specific data for the solution you are looking for.

BTW, this is not an IRS Tip site. It so happens that zahead31 may have some experience in that topic.

However, if you have a question relating to the mechanics for some specific IRS computation, there are members here who can show you features within Excel, that can accomplish said calculations if you can explain what you need clearly, concisely and completely.
