Using Excel as the Front end ???

I'm building an app for someone who wants to use Excel as the front end, but the volume of data they are using would be much better handled by an Access database. I have set one up as an ODBC Data source, and used Excel's External Data feature to import the data.

However...

They'd like to be able to update some of the data which is in the Database, and I'm not sure how to do this.

I have worked Excel from Access before, which was very neat, as Excel seemed to work in the background, only showing up as a process in Taskmanager (took me a while to figure out how to successfully close that process down).

I've been trying a similar method from Excel, but I have only come accross a method to CreatObject which opens a whole instance of Access (very slow and unnecessary for what I want to do).

Has anyone ever attempted something like this, or know how to do it?
All suggestions, tips, advice welcome.
