Using DCPromo

I just want to verify something about using dcpromo.

I have a couple of servers in AD, if I dcpromo one of the servers out of the AD, and then dcpromo back into the AD will all of my shares and programs remain intact?

I'm sure the programs will be fine I am more concerned about the shares. I think it would be fine but want to make sure first.

Thanks,

Ooooohhhh, that's an interesting question. I think the shares would be unaffected with the exception of the DC shares (netlogon, sysvol). BUT, to be sure, I would dcpromo a non-critical server (or build a server just for this test), create a couple of shares, and see what happens when adding and removing DC functions.

Post the results so we can see, too.

Well, I have a server here that I started setting up for exchange. I plan on going live some time next year. Regardless, I decided to use it for the test. I was already in AD, and it has Echange 2003 Ent on it.

So I dcpromo it out of AD and my shares are fine. Exchange on the other hand is wrecked...totally.

I am not sure what the deal is, but I cant even promo back into AD. I am going to remove exchange and try again.

Don't put Exchange on a DC, you can't manipulate the DC as much without breaking Exchange (as you've seen). Even for testing, you'll get potentially flawed results.
