How do I configure my cdrw so that it behaves as a hard drive in Win XP?

Don't think XP's native CD writing abilities can do this. Think you need third party software to 'prepare' each disk you wish to use in this way (like Nero's Incd).

I take it you would like to use a RWdisk in CD-RW ..

xp will not support this function you could use something like :-

adaptec cd software

Try direct cd from easy cd creator.

many thanks all. used Nero and it works!
