hi,

I have an NT4 server running Proxy with a second NIC for ADSL, from the server I can get out to the internet really quickly but on the client PC's it takes an age. I have tried taking proxy settings out of internet explorer, used it with proxy, tried gateways etc. Will internet access be slower on a client PC as they have to go from the internal network then to the server, then the second NIC then out through ADSL?

I was thinking of putting in a SOHO firewall to bypass Proxy all together. Will this be quicker than proxy? I think so as the SOHO is harware based so therefore quicker than software proxy.

Any ideas???

Andy

Hi Andy,

I've just come into a company as a consultant for a few weeks who have just what you have. Speed on the clients is fine, not to sure whats happening with yours. We have 10 client machines. I will have a rummage around my settings here.

The down side here is that proxy is not being used which means the reporting etc doesn't work, so the only 'firewall' is the two NICs (mulithomes) not ideal and something I intend to resolve. I'll get back to you once I've had a look at what's in our box here.

hi,

so basically your server has 2 NICS, one for the internal network and the other plugged into the ADSL? your client pc's dont have any proxy clients or proxy settings? but can get out through the server? do they use a gateway?

Andy

Andy,

Here is the set up here.

Two NICs an Inter Pro 100+ Server for the internal network the other is a Netgear FA310.

The Intel NIC is set with the standard SBS stuff or IP addressing of your choice.

The Netgear is attached to the ADSL router so in the TCP/IP settings for this NIC you need to have the IP address of the ADSL router and the gateway address. These should be supplied to you by your ISP?

Then make sure IP routing is selected.

Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvoius with some of this but I don't know where your at. Hope this proves helpful

I have exactly the same setup but the server has proxy server installed. If i browsed through the server i can get out straight away but on a users pc it takes longer to get out.

Andy,

Have you tried stopping the proxy services?

Proxy is only used here to use the SBS console and even then the Internet reporting doesn't work. Try stopping all the services and see what happens. Make sure all client browsers have all the options unchecked in the LAN Settings in Connections

The trouble is if proxy isnt being used then isnt there a rather big security risk?

sure there is a threat but just stop them enough to see if proxy is messing up you DMZ. Also make sure that IP forwarding is DESELECTED!!! in TCP/IP This is a must. I managed to get proxy to work ok in our DMZ here after the ususal wrestling with proxy 2.0. Might be worth exchanging settings?
