In our office we are running Windows 2003 Server with Exchange server 2003. All running in the 2003 mode. Recently a company joint our company. They are running Windows 2000 Server (Native). There is no exchange server running on the 2000 domein.

Through a VPN connection we setted up a two-way trust between the 2 domains. We can set up userpermissions on both domains. So the trust is working. Is there a possibility to use the Exchange 2003 server for users from the Windows 2000 domain??

Yes, your Exchange server can receive mail for multiple domains. Just set up the new domain name under recipient policies. Then point the other company to that server.

Tip: If you have Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 and the clients have Outlook 2003 running on XP then they could use Outlook over HTTP so they are not dependent on the VPN for email.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

one quick question though, once you set up the other domain in the recipient policies, they will get the e-mail from the other domain, but when you resopnd will it look like its coming from the "other" domain? or the domain first set up on the machine?

That would depend on which you have set as that users default.

The solution you discribe is not the solution of my problem. You're talking about email domain's. What I mean is can I create for a user of the Windows 2000 domain a mailbox on the Exchange server in the Windows 2003 domain. I don't want to create to accounts for everyone in the Windows 2000 domain. The users on the Windows 2000 domain should be able to open there Outlook, when there are logged on to the Windows 2000 domain.

Thanks in advance

Thomas

Now I follow you. I do not believe you can do that. Mailboxes are an attribute of a user object, therefore you would need to establish a user object for those users in the domain with Exchange.

I hope you find this post helpful.

And the possibility to do a forestprep en domainprep on the Windows 2000 Server, and then try to connect to the exchange server?? Any experience with that??

Thomas

No, I don't think that would work at all because the installation of the Exchange server will populate the AD Schema, unless you were installing Exchange on that domain it would not have the values.

You could attempt it with a hacker's mentality to try and duplicate your schema settings, but I would not advise it.

I hope you find this post helpful.
