Is it possible to automatically populate a form field or hidden variable with a users NT/XP login name?

Yes it's possible but you have to ensure that your server is not using anonymous authentication. Have your server administrator set that up.

Definitely not anonymous, using sharepoint as well. How do I obtain the data though?
