User rights.

I have a user that needs to find out who's using a certain file and then disconnect them if needed. I go the Server Manager and click the IN USE button. Is there another way of doing this?

Try 'net file' from the command line.

That command will also allow you to '<id> /close' (disconnect) them. MCSE NT4/W2K

Err, I believe if they have the right to &quot;log on locally&quot;, they have the permission to close a files connection.

I could be wrong though - I've never needed to know (thus never tried to find out) what permissions were needed.. MCSE NT4/W2K

There is one utility called NETWATCH which comes with windows nt resourse kit.Using this utility u can check who is using files and shares on ur server u can disconnect them from this utility also.

What kind of rights will the user need to use NetWatch?
Will they need special rights to the share.

The user in question is not an Admin and I don't want to give him admin rights. But if I could get away with giving him special rights to a specific share that would be okay.

Just try them and see if the user can do what you require, with the access they currently have. It shouldn't be too hard to set up a test scenario... MCSE NT4/W2K

Hi,

The user should have the administratative rights on that perticular server or the workstation where the files and shared directories are kept.
