I have an Access 2000 database set up on a public drive at work where many users can use at the same time. I tried user level security setting up with just myself as the administrator. It gave me a shortcut to the database on the desktop, and works just fine. My question is how do I set up other users within user level security??? I gave tried several times but could only get other users to work on my own PC??? When the security kicks in it alters the DB from where ever it is saved so only the desktop icon on my PC can open it, how do I get this on other users computers?

thanks in advance

ab

They should have a shortcut on their desktop.
The shortcut target should be something like this:
"\path\to\msaccess.exe" "\\server\share\database.mdb" /wrkgrp "\\server\share\database.mdw"

Hope This Helps, PH.

thanks for the reply, however, I couldn't find it. I just moved the MDB file from desktop to the folder where the back end and the rest of the database folders files were, on the public drive. Hopfully this will work, looks like it will.

thanks,

ab

thanks for the reply, I could not find it however i just moved the MDB file from the desktop and placed it into the folder where all of the other access files were. Seems to work.

thanks,

ab

When you set up the security you created a security file with ends in .mdw

That file MUST be accessible to all users.
So that xxxx.mdw file must go on the server
(Usually in the root above all the database files that rely on it )

Then you copy your desktop shortcut into the same folder as the database.
go to other people's machines and copy the shortcut back fron the folder to THEIR desktop.
Check that the 'Target' inside the shortcut complies with the ormat in PHV's post above and all should be well.

I have tried to get into the database on other users computers, but a messege saying that I do not have proper permissions. How is that? The db was secured on a public drive, i should be abl to open it up on another computer. I have checked and the MDW file is present in the folder???

But are you usingthe shortcut defined in PHV's post above.

You cannot just double click on the file in Windoz Explorer - or open MSAccess and open the database using the Fileopen dialog box.

You must use the shortcut correctly set up - ( the other approach is to permanently associate MSAccess with the new security.mdw file - but, trust me, you do NOT want to be going down that route. )
