I have a laptop with XP did a normal shutdown. Upon restart logged onto my user name. Error message came up User files Corrupted. No desktop icons. It put me into a temp user and my files are not there. No back-up, one file has hundreds of hours. Please help. Restore won't get then back still says User files Corrupted.

Thanks
Scott

gpalmer711's advice above will restore your original profile.

But I am concerned that other issues are to play here than simple profile corruption. If Greg's advice above does not resolve the issue, could you (more carefully) write down the exact error message and repost to the Forum?

Did what Greg said. The file in question did not return. FYI It was saved to the desktop. This the message. at top in the header: User enviroment. Then: windows cannot load your profile it may be corrupt contact your administrator. Then after OK: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes to this profile will be lost when you log off.
This computer is a friend of mine's. He got this message and used the temporary user and then closed. I think this is where he lost the file. Tried system restore won't restore to a date where the file was made. Any way to find the file?

Thanks
Scott

If it was saved to the desktop it likely is sitting in the Desktop folder of the original profile.

Use Explorer to examine the folder contents of \Documents and Settings
