We run an SBS server with exchange 5.5, and have another office in holland wich uses the same domain name for email. When we send email to them the exchange server automatically routes it externally because it can't find the addresses internally.
However when one of the users recieves a mail from anyone at the dutch location, he can't reply directly, getting an error "The following recipien(s) could not be reached:". If he just sends an email without forwarding, to the same address then no problem, similarly no other users experiance this error.
I've run out of ideas for this one, as this user is no different than any other.
