i have two 2960 and want to expierement with VLANS. what is a good router I can get off ebay to do this that wont kill my network? I have about 100 users

That switch should have vlan support. You shouldn't need a router.

dont I need a router so the vlans can comunicate with one another? switch is layer 2 and I believe i need a layer 3 device

You are correct that a switch is a layer 2 device, however, many switches support simple routing and multiple vlans. I do believe the 2960 is one of those. Which exact model do you have and what IOS are you running?

thanks for responding again

here is the info

Product ID: WS-C2960-48TT-L
Version ID: V02
Software: 12.2(35)SE1

I would think that would do it, but I can't seem to find the documenation that says yea or nay. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Have you tried just creating a routed vlan on one of those switches to see if it will let you?

nope i havent created one b/c I always though a layer 3 device was needed to handle vlans

vlans themselves are actually layer2. Once you make that vlan "routable" it can pass layer3 traffic.

Hello
To do the router on a stick thing.Any anything higher than the 2620 is OK!!My personel choice is the 1721.
Regards

i actually posed this question to someone @ cisco and what I need is a 3560 and that will do it

I'd get a second opinion before you spend $3000. Minue's router on a stick option would work as well, and I imagine the 1721 is cheaper than a 3560, but I don't know for sure.

Well I think cisco is trying to push sales on their new level 3 switches. The 3560 is 3 time more expensive than a 1721 from Cisco. One Ebay you can get one for 1200USD,where as the 1721 is only 150USD.
You already have switches, you don't need another. It would have been the better choice if you needed a switch. But for what you want to do the router will be the correct choice.
Regards
