With the demise of my Toshiba tecra 8100, I would like to use the LCD display as a flat panel display for a normal PC....

Has anyone done anything like this? Is it complex, or within bounds of reason? I am comfortable building stndard PCs from scratch, but have never taken my laptop apart - maybe now is the opportunity1

My objective is to connect this to a PC on the network and mount the monitor in the kitchen for use as a general purpose information system - news, weather, mapquest etc. utilizing a wireless mouse and keyboard

Suggestions appreciated!

You would probably have to obtain the service manual for the laptop, which will not be cheap, you will then need to rig your own power, controls etc and fit it into a case of some sort.

For the amount of work involved it would probably be a lot easier and cheaper to just buy an TFT/LCD flatscreen montior, 15" ones are very reasonably priced.

You might be able to but you'd have to be sure to get the inverter and any other item between the panel and the motherboard. And as mentioned, power for it would be an issue.

I would estimate the time and expense would be much more than going out and buying a flat panel display, even if you had the hardware knowledge. The screen is driven from parts on the motherboard.
