Hi Experts,

I bought a new USB2.0 card, inserted into the motherboard and installed the driver program. When opened the PC, the Windows found the card and the driver program but kept restart. Do you have any experiences like this and do you have any idea?

The system: Windows98SE, p200, 128+32 memory.
The card:
ALi
M5273 A1
0441 TS05
CKA46581000B
The drivers that came with the card are
E:\USB2.0 PCI CARD\ALI\WINDOWS\
Ehci_144.exe
Ehci_145.exe
Ehci_152.exe
When opened the PC, it found a new hardware and the driver program c:\Windows\INF\USB.INF. After it copied files from Windows98SE, the Windows restarted and repeated the whole procedure.

We have had lots of issues on older motherboards and USB2 cards.
The only advice I can give you is to see if the shop will swap the card for one with a different controller chip.
Instead of the ALi perhaps an NEC or Via based card instead.

Lots of probs with the ALI chipset, just as paparazi said, NEC is the best.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Occasionally when I've run into this problem on old socket7 mobos, changing the card's PCI slot sometimes helps. But if not, replace it as others have suggested.

Also, Microsoft does not provide support for USB2.0 for Win98. It's another way to push people to go to XP. So don't be surprised if you can only get USB 1.1 speeds under Win98.

I can confirm that NEC is the best bet for these controllers. It even works in an old 486 system that I have. The one drawback is that it will require up to 3 IRQs from your system to work, and this may cause conflicts with other resources in your system. There are many posts on that subject in the forums. If you get a version with only two or three ports, then chances are that it will only request two IRQs, if the manufacturer has correctly configured the part.

Microsoft doesn't offer support, but the USB card manufacturer should provide a driver that will work under Win98. Some manufacturers don't, so make sure you bought a card that comes with one.

Thanks for so many advices, I will try what you said and report the result.
cdogg mentioned I should buy a card that comes with the driver. Yes, I was tried the driver comes with the card.

Also, you might want to consider removing your sound card
temporarily, allowing more resource availibility and see if it installs that way. Your Sound Card is probably your biggest resource hog and is probably a little more forgiving with base addressing and Irq assignments.I have had to do this in the past with some odd modems in order to resolve conflicts.

daveask,
Not just ANY driver - one that supports Win98. Most cards I've seen do, but there are some that have poor compatibility with other devices and/or system settings. So trying another brand as Martin suggested can resolve the problem in some cases.

Hi Experts,

Thank you so much for all your suggestions and advices.

I really don't know what I have done, anyway, now, my Windows98SE not restarted anymore (good news?) but I cannot found USB icon in the right bottom corner, cannot access USB....

Any idea?

Now, in the USB key, the green light is always on. Does that mean I have installed the driver successfully?
Just can not find anywhere to access the USB....
