I have a scanner with db25 port and a laptop with usb port.

Plenty of old cables lying about, and I have pinout diagrams for both types of terminals.

Is it possible to fabricate a cable to connect usb to db25?

Or is there a smarter connection required than just splicing wires?

Thanks, Mike

Try a google search for "serial to usb". Several providers.
There is more than cabling involved.

Well, I have already made plenty google searches, and have found some usb to db9 adapters -- looks like a plain old cable to me.

Did not find usb to db25, however there are db9 to db25 adapters available.

If I want to spend $60 including shipping, I can get both adapters sent to me in Hawaii in a week or so.

If it really is just cabling, I could figure out the pinout crossover wiring, and do it for free in about an hour. Hope springs eternal.

It really isn't just cable. The adapter you linked to will have the conversion circuitry.

Thanks, Ed, I appreciate what you are saying. However the link provided by micker above shows a direct wiring of usb to rs232 (I think that's the same as db9), with no other conversion.

Of course, that doesn't mean it will work.

There will indeed be conversion circuitry, not to mention that a driver will be needed before the OS can address the USB interface for the purpose it is being used for.... best to purchase a fully compatible and tested solution, rather than make one (which could cause damage to your computer)

Hope this helps

The link provided shows the wiring of a device that can use either USB or serial. But there is no direct USB to serial connection involved.
232 uses separate send and receive and voltage swings to indicate data, along with several handshake lines. USB is a multiplexed current swing sensing protocol with built in handshaking. They don't mix.
