USB scanner hassle!

I have installed a new USB scanner [Hewlett Packard scanjet 5400c] on PC running Win98 SE, and get error message "Cannot initialise. Scanner not found".

I have tried both USB ports, changed the cable, checked that USB was enabled in the Bios [it was], uninstalled and re-installed the software, deleted USB devices in Device Manager and gone through the 'add new hardware' routine several times, but still get the error.

There are no error messages on the scanner itself - it is just acting as if it is not connected to the PC.

Any help appreciated!

Check in device manager under sound, video + game controllers. If you have a "gameport joystick" or "microsoft mpu audio driver(wdm)", diable both of them. I have seen these conflict w/ hp scanners.
Might be a start!
