Bought new HP deskjet 3820 and am using USB to connect to my Dell with WinXP. Power is on and everything is hooked up right but the printer is not detected by XP or the driver installation software.

USB printer not detected

yes make sure USB is enabled, but secondly with epsons and scanners i have found before you connect the device you have to install the software and driver....restart....connect tehe device before it boots up again and let it detect. sometimes you have to let it boot up and load and then connect the device.
I don't know if HP is that way also but on numerous occasions i have had to follow this exact process to get it to detect.
