HI

Had a USB cordless mouse and K/B that stopped working in windows XP, when I replugged the receiver into the USB port it came up with a message that the devise was malfunctioning.

So I bought a new USB corded mouse and a PS2 K/B plugged them both in and all was well, since then I have rebooted a couple of times and all was fine.

Switched off last night when turned PC on this morning same problem message saying mouse not working devise malfunction I have tried different USB ports but still it does not work, even though all was ok yesterday.

Any ideas.

Make sure that the USB ports still work by connecting a different USB device.

If the USB ports are ok, then disconnect all USB devices, except the one for the mouse.
If the mouse now works, then your MB's USB hub does not have sufficient power to supply all of the devices.
Consider installing a powered USB hub.

If the mouse is the only USB device, then there may be a problem with the MB's USB hub.
See if installing a PCI USB controller card fixes things.

Thanks for all of your help.

WE think we have solved the problem but it was strange solution and one I would not expect to be the answer, when I went into the BIOS the PnP setting for the OS was set to (NO), we reset it to (yes) and all seems OK.

Is there a virus that can effect the BIOS setting as the machine has worked OK for 18 months then the exisiting mouse went wrong (not unusual) and the replacement worked OK for half a day and then stopped when the machine was switched off overnight then when we set the Bios to PnP (yes)all was fine.

Most strange, I cannot see any viable reason for the answer to be this however I am sure the system would have been shipped with the PnP option set to (Yes) so at some stage it was changed how is the question.

Problem not solved.

When I left the PC after the last entry all was OK, the mouse was working and the PS2 K/B we had attached was all OK.

Then I get a phone call the next day and the mouse is not working again and the USB port is not recognising the mouse.

The only other USB port used is for the printer and that is turned off at the printer, however I have not unplugged the USB port.

I am now concerened that as their antivirus is out of subscription time it expired about 3 months ago.

How can I check the Motherboard Mouse and Keyboard controllers without a PCI diagnostic card?

Does the USB printer work?

If not, then there's a problem with the MB's USB hub, and the fix is to either install a PCI USB controller card, or install a new MB.

If the printer works, then disconnect it.
If the mouse now works, then consider installing a powered USB hub.

OK

Again we think we have solved the problem.

The power supply green light on front of PC box was flickering (should be constant) so we replaced the PSU and all seems OK, all usb devices working fine.

Also any new mouse that is now attached works instantly as it should which was not happening before.

If we have any other problems I will post.

Thanks for the heads up SYAR2003
