Looking at a customer's PC which was having USB problems (his memory stick showing up as unknown device). I tried my definitely working till then! stick in his machine. It was recognised, but machine froze trying to access its contents.

Later at another customer, tried using my stick - and got unknown device. Slightly worrying, as I'd just run a successful repair reinstall, and other USB devices were working. So have now tried in several machines - same thing. Looks like its dead - but wondered if anybody has come across this before and has a fix (ideally I'd like the data - couple of items not backed up). I've seen the unknown device many times - but have never seen a machine cause it (which I'm presuming is what happened - or big coincidence).

Thanks for any ideas.

Note: - its a 256MB buffalo clipdrive - been working with absolutely no problems for over a year.

Hi wolluf. That doesn't sound good. The only thing that I could think of to try might be to use a powered USB 1.1 hub. It probably won't matter, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve - I'll try it when I can get my hands on a powered hub.
