I had a usb key that worked fine,

then it does not work anymore, i have windows xp pro, i put it in the slot, then i get the "Safely remove hardware" icon near the clock, so it detects that its there, but it does not create a drive for me 2 access it,

if i restart the computer while the usb is connected it says not a valid system disk, so it is working, i tried it on another computer and it works.

If i try a different usb key on my computer it works, has any1 got any ideas?

a driver issue? sumthing got corrupted?

thanks

Have you got more than 3 (physical) drives in your PC and other mapped drives? I have had this problem a number of times on my main computer as it has 4 physical drives and any number of mapped drives depending on what I am doing.

The problem occurs when I have a drive mapped as drive E (Usually occurs when I am attached to a novell server). Windows seems to want to map USB drives starting from E, so if I have a network drive of drive E and insert my USB key, Windows sometimes maps the USB key as drive E but gives no indication that it is now the USB key instead of the mapped drive.

I haven't actually been bothered to fix this myself as I just 'live with it' but there must be a way of starting windows with the old 'lastdrive = g' command that you used to be able to put in autoexec.bat (Suggestions anyone?)

Hope this helps.

I use that too, and it maps to I:\ so that drive limit is not true. I has always done that, even when I add a drive, it move up to J:\

Pulg it in, go to control panel - hardware and delete the driver. reboot while removing it.
Plug it in again and let Windows re-discover it.

ok it was d mapped drive thing, we are on a novell/windows network. removed the mappings and it worked

but what i want to know is how come when a different usb key, different brand was put in it chose a different letter and it worked?

If I plug in my old USB 1.1, it defaults to the lowest open port "Removable Drive K". When I plug in my USB 2.2, the listing shows "USB Drive P" (I have other USB peripherals in-between).
